Monday, February 9

Night Train kicks off Mingus Week – a salute to one of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners for the February feature – with some classic music from Mingus and part one of a two-part Jazz Profiles Mingus special. Plus a birthday salute to one of the leading saxophonists on the scene today – Steve Wilson – with music he did along with Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and on the Grammy-nominated 2014 release from the Gerry Gibbs Thrasher Dream Trio.

Tuesday, February 10

Night Train marks birthdays of trumpeter Paolo Fresu, bassist Rufus Reid, and pianists Antonio Adolfo and Sir Roland Hanna. Plus more music from Mingus in conjunction with the February Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients feature. Music from his Mingus Dynasty album and one of his classic compositions from the new album from cellist Akua Dixon – and part two of a Jazz Profiles Mingus special are on tap.

Wednesday, February 11

Night Train marks birthdays of Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson and violinist Didier Lockwood. Plus more music from Mingus, including his moving tribute to “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love” and a live performance from the Mingus Big Band. Also music from other Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients – the Night Train February feature – including Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and 2015 inductee Wayne Shorter.

Thursday, February 12

Night Train celebrates the birthday of saxophonist and jazz educator Brent Jensen with music from albums under his own name and as a sideman – and wraps up Mingus week with music from his Blues & Roots album and a performance of his large-scale work, Epitaph. Plus new music from James Farm and Joe Sample with the NDR Big Band.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
