Decking The Halls With Holiday Jazz

Lots of seasonal favorites on tap tonight on the Night Train, including some Chipmunk and Charlie Brown Christmas songs, along with holiday music from jazz legend Dave Brubeck, pianist Duke Pearson, Paul Zauners Christmas All Stars, and singers Betty Carter and Mary Stallings.

Tuesday 12.23.14

Night Train celebrates the birthdays of New Orleans trumpeter Irvin Mayfield (including music from his new holiday release, A New Orleans Creole Christmas), pianist Laurence Hobgood, and jazz legend Chet Baker – with holiday music from him in the first hour, and then in hour two of the show, a New Jazz Archives special, with music and insights from Baker biographer James Gavin.

Wednesday 12.24.14

Christmas Special I:  Join us on KMUW tonight as the Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency for an evening of holiday music. Jazz versions of seasonal favorites are featured for the entire show – from jazz holiday classics to contemporary holiday releases, including tuba seasonal favorites from Travelin’ Light, the Hollywood Tuba 12 and Rhythm  & Brass; classics from Joe Pass, the Ray Brown Trio, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Charlie Byrd; some bluesy holiday tunes from B.B. King and Houston Person; and new holiday music from Joey DeFrancesco, Marilyn Scott, Renee Fleming, Pee Wee Ellis, and Cecile McLorin Salvant.

Thursday 12.25.14

Christmas Special II:  Join us on KMUW tonight as the Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency for an evening of holiday music. Jazz versions of seasonal favorites are featured for the entire show – from jazz holiday classics to contemporary holiday releases, including music from the New York Voices, Rene Marie, Wynton Marsalis, the Ted Rosenthal Trio, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
