A Bernie Sanders supporter in Wichita is still holding out hope for her candidate to somehow be nominated at the National Democratic Convention in July, but if not, she plans to vigorously help to secure local wins for Democrats. Republicans are also seeking committed volunteers to help invigorate their campaigns.
Die-hard Sanders supporter Carri New is a delegate being sent to the National Democratic Convention in July. She says if Bernie Sanders concedes, she will turn most of her attention to Kansas races.
"My plan is to move the energy that’s been there for Bernie," New says. "We had 900 people. My plan is to move that energy into down-ballot races. We’ve got a lot of really good progressive candidates running in Wichita and the surrounding areas, and I want to get them volunteers and help and make sure that we get some good progressives in this state."
Republicans are rolling up their sleeves as well, requesting volunteers for phone banks and door-to-door efforts. The GOP will host a candidate forum on Thursday at the Wichita Area Builders Association. A non-partisan candidate forum will also be held on Saturday, during Wichita's Juneteenth Celebration.
