Global Village celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with songs dedicated to him, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement he lead, and that reflect human rights themes performed by artists from around the globe.
Tuesday, January 19
Global Village features contemporary releases from and inspired by music of the Middle East and North Africa including a number of selections for the January Best of 2015 feature. Highlights include 2015 Global Village favorites - French guitarist and composer Titi Robin, Iranian singer (and former Axiom of Choice member) Mamak Khadem, Paris-based world-fusion artist Aziz Sahmaoui, and the Dutch ‘Arabicana’ band No Blues. Plus a Transglobal World Music Chart Best of 2015 selection from Souad Massi, Persian singer Mahsa Vahdat with soul and gospel singer Mighty Sam McClain (who passed away in 2015), a new album from Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco, and even some heavy metal sounds from the Arabic Rock Orchestra.
Wednesday, January 20
Global Village celebrates the birthday of Mexican composer, arranger, pianist, bandleader and stereophonic Space Age Bachelor Pad Music pioneer Esquivel. Plus more of the Best of 2015 – the January Global Village feature – with music this time from Paquito d’Rivera with Quinteto Cimarron, Buena Vista Social Club, Mbongwana Star, Bassekou Kouyate and more.
Thursday, January 21
This time in the Global Village – some coastal sounds with music from Canadian group, Pacifika; the Pacific Premieres album from Quartet San Francisco; the Garifuna Collective from the Caribbean coast of Central America; and from one of the pioneers of champeta music from the Caribbean coast of Columbia.
Friday, January 22
It takes two…or three or four to tango – and Global Village has that many featured selections to showcase the scope of tango music - from Lagrima Rios, "The Black Pearl of Tango", to a classic from early tango star Carlos Gardel performed by Berta Rojas on her Latin-Grammy nominated album History of Tango, along with the latest from ‘new tango’ master Pablo Ziegler (with something a bit different in a piece called “Mahavishnu Tango” written with John McLaughlin), and tango by way of Germany from the 2015 album Tango from Quadro Nuevo.
Plus more of the Best of 2015(the Global Village January feature) - this time from Canadian Folk Music Award nominee and Transglobal World Music Chart Best of 2015 selection, Tetu from Le Vent du Nord, and show favorites Kirk Elliot & the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul, Brazilian singer Ceumar, and the show’s number one pick for the year, Anouar Brahem’s Souvenance.
