Night Train kicks off a new month’s feature celebrating Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipients and a week-long salute to the first jazz artist so honored – Duke Ellington. Along with music from Duke in hour one of the show, the first of a two part Jazz Profiles special in hour two surveys his music and career. Plus birthdays of tenor saxophonists Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt, and new music from Ahmad Jamal and Louis Hayes with the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band.
Tuesday, February 3
Night Train marks birthdays of Bob Stewart, John Handy, Dennis Rowland, and Cindy Scott – and continues with more of the February feature, celebrating recipients of Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards. Music from Duke Ellington, the first jazz artist so honored, is showcased throughout the entire week. Tonight’s show also includes part two of a Jazz Profiles overview of the career and music of Duke Ellington. Plus new music from Kenny Barron with Dave Holland, drummer Ali Jackson, and Clark Terry protégé Justin Kauflin.
Wednesday, February 4
Night Train continues its salute to Duke Ellington – the first jazz artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award – with new releases featuring Ellington compositions from cellist Akua Dixon, the Mike Longo Trio, pianist Larry Fuller and guitarist Pascal Bokar. Then in hour two of the show it’s part one of a two-part Jazz Profiles special that explores Ellington’s artistry as a bandleader.
Thursday, February 5
Throughout February Night Train features music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipients. Tonight’s show features new releases with compositions from award winners Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and Irving Berlin. All this week Night Train has also been showcasing music from Duke Ellington – the first jazz artist to be so honored. In hour one, there’s music from Ellington with Coltrane and other artists, then in hour two, it’s part two of a Jazz Profiles special highlighting Ellington’s artistry as a bandleader.
