Fania's 50th And Birthdays Of John Martyn, Roy Ayers, Mickey Hart & Raymond Scott

Monday September 8

Global Village highlights some meetings of different musical worlds, including world jazz fusion from George Brooks, Fareed Haque, and Lionel Loueke; a different approach to a Pat Metheny composition from salsa star Ruben Blades; the world chamber sounds of Ensemble Polaris; Spanish Celtic music from Milladoiro; and some bossa Beatles.

Tuesday September 9

Some giants of African music are featured in this edition of the Global Village – including music from the classic Talking Timbuktu album from Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder; South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo (with special guest Dolly Parton); African reggae great Lucky Dube; and the Father of Ethio-Jazz, Mulatu Astatke.

Wednesday September 10

Global Village marks the birthday of vibes player Roy Ayers with music he did with Afrobeat legend Fela and world jazz flute man Herbie Mann. It’s also the birthday of cult favorite Raymond Scott and Global Village highlights music from Scott himself along with inventive contemporary versions of his compositions from Quartet San Francisco, the Beau Hunks, and Ghost Train Orchestra.  Plus music from Fania for the September feature – this time the label debut of legendary Latin soul, salsa and jazz drummer Ray Baretto – and new music from Project Trio and the Far Out Brazilian Bass compilation.

 Thursday September 11

More music from Fania Records this time in the Global Village – the September feature to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the 50th anniversary of the label – this time with music from Orquestra Harlow and Joe Bataan. Plus birthday salutes to English folk-rock great John Martyn and Mickey Hart (the world music side of the Grateful Dead drummer) and new music from award-winning African singer Sia Tolno with Afrobeat legend Tony Allen (Fela’s drummer and musical director), the Rough Guide to African Blues, Best of Hossam Ramzy Vol. III and a preview of Ritmos Unidos.

Friday  September 12

Global Village explores some world/jazz fusions through the music of three artists with birthdays today – percussionist Adam Rudolph (with the Go Organic Orchestra, Hassan Hakmoun & Don Cherry, and Shadowfax), trombonist Steve Turre (from his Lotus Flower release), and trumpeter Brian Lynch (with Latin music legend Eddie Palmieri). Plus music from exiled artists Rahim Al Haj and the group Red Chamber – and more from Fania Records – the Global Village September feature to celebrate both the 50th anniversary of the label and Hispanic Heritage Month – this time from one of key figures on the label, Willie Colon.
