Global Village marks birthdays of two great world-jazz artists for the April Jazz Appreciation Month feature – legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and Latin jazz pianist Michel Camilo. It is also the birthday of acclaimed English folk rock bassist Danny Thompson and the show will explore a couple of his world projects. Plus new music from Spanish Afrobeat group Ogun Africa, Canadian-based South African artist Lorraine Klaasen, and the duo of Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita.

Wednesday, April 5

Global Village continues the April Jazz Appreciation Month celebration with some African artists inspired by jazz – two saxophonists, Manu Dibango from Cameroon and Mamadou Barry from Guinea, and the father of Ethiojazz, Mulatu Astatke. The show also marks the birthday of one of the pioneers of Turkish rock, Cem Karaca, and highlights new Afro-Caribbean sounds from The Bongo Hop, and the latest in the acclaimed Ethiopiques series, a new album from Golden Age artist Girma Beyene.

Thursday, April 6

Global Village showcases classical guitar releases that draw on music not only of Spain, but also of the Americas and Turkey. Plus folkloric guitarists Beppe Gambetta and Tony McManus teamed up on a world music-inspired project, Portuguese folk from the group Seiva, and new tango music from Pablo Ziegler with Quique Sinesi.

Friday, April 7

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases. Among the highlights this time:

Newly reissued ‘80s recordings from the ‘Father of Ethiojazz,’ Mulatu Astatke

The first new record in a decade from Senegal’s acclaimed Orchestra Baobab

Funky bhangra from Red Baraat

The latest from Vieux Farka Toure, the son of Malian legend Ali Farka Toure

A new compilation of ‘70s Turkish psychedelic music from Germany’s Uzelli label

And some rare sounds from Tunisia from Bargou 08
