Global Village celebrates the birthday of Cuban master bassist Cachao and producer and Los Lobos band member Steve Berlin. Plus music from September featured artists, Third World, from their most recent album, Under the Magic Sun – and new music from the Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra, ‘desert blues’ group Terakaft, and Putumayo’s Afro-Caribbean Party compilation.
Tuesday, September 15
Global Village celebrates the start of Hispanic Heritage Month with a program devoted entirely to the wide range of Latin sounds and artists that have helped shape American music. Latin jazz, soul and rock are all featured, including some of the legends of the music, among them Machito, MongoSantamaria, Los Lobos and Santana – plus some rare sides from Joe King Carrasco, Flash & the Dynamics and more.
Wednesday, September 16
Global Village celebrates Mexican Independence Day with music from Mexico – including a wide variety of regional styles, music from the traditional to the contemporary, and selections from American artists of Mexican descent. Among the artists featured are Café Tacuba, Maldita Vecindad, Lila Downs, Sones de Mexico and Esquivel.
Thursday, September 17
This time in the Global Village, some different takes on classic artists and styles of music, including new versions of jazz classics by John Coltrane (from Carlos Santana with John McLaughlin), Django Reinhardt (by Les Primitifs du Futur) and Charlie Parker (from Carmen Souza) - folk music revisited and reimagined in the Imagined Village, and music of reggae legend Bob Marley revisited and remixed on the Legends Remixed album.
Friday, September 18
Global Village celebrates birthdays of Brazilian pianist, composer and educator Jovino Santos Neto, and Algerian rai star Rachid Taha. Plus music from a solo album from Bunny Rugs, a member of Third World – the reggae band featured throughout September in the Global Village, along with music from the group’s Serious Business album. There’s also Nation Beat’s new celebration of Brazilian and Crescent City carnival music, the latest from Canadian band Vishten, Putumayo’s recent Celtic Café compilation, and the soundtrack to the documentary about Cambodian rock, Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten.
