Kansas House Lawmaker Says He’ll Continue Work On Business Taxes

Kansas Legislature

Governor Sam Brownback’s administration says the governor will veto any tax bills that include a roll-back of business income tax cuts. Brownback’s secretary of revenue made that announcement over the weekend. But Republican Representative Mark Hutton, from Wichita, says he’ll keep pushing for a change in business income tax rules.

“My job is to vote for legislation that I believe is best for Kansas. I hope we can get it to him so he can see if he really wants to do that,” Hutton says.

Hutton, himself a business owner, says he won’t ask Kansans to pay more in sales tax if some business owners don’t have to pay any income taxes. Lawmakers are looking at increasing taxes to close the state's budget gap.

The Kansas Constitution requires the state to operate with a balanced budget, and several important fiscal deadlines are looming. State employee furloughs will begin next week if a budget hasn't been passed.
