Global Village kicks off the February feature marking the birthday of Bob Marley and highlighting the new roots reggae revival throughout the entire month. Plus a salute to Bob Marley’s favorite singer, Dennis Brown, on his birthday, new music from Black Masala, Mamadou Kelly, and the Souljazz Orchestra, and some soul jazz from organist Charles Kynard.
Tuesday, February 2
Global Village celebrates birthdays of bassist Cachaito of the Buena Vista Social Club, exotica hitmaker Arthur Lyman, and Haitian compass pioneer Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Plus more music for the February Bob Marley/Roots Reggae Revival feature, and new music from Brazil’s Bixiga 70 and the Senegal 70 compilation.
Wednesday, February 3
Global Village marks birthdays of two jazz artists who incorporate world influences in their work – saxophonist John Handy and tuba master Bob Stewart (including a guest appearance with Taj Mahal). Plus more for the February Bob Marley/Roots Reggae Revival feature – this time including a Marley cover from the roots-jazz-Latin band Rebel Tumbao, and Marley himself from the classic Burnin’ album. And there’s new music from St. Germain and Grupo Fantasma.
Thursday, February 4
Here in the midst of winter…what better time to head to the Caribbean! Global Village does just that with a variety of artists and styles, including music from February featured artist Bob Marley, and also from Jamaican compatriots Sly and Robbie. The sound of Trinidad’s steel drums is showcased by the Our Boys Steel Orchestra. There’s music from Haiti’s acclaimed roots group, Boukman Eksperyans. And from Cuba, Global Village has music from legendary bassist and composer (he wrote the song that gave mambo its name), Cachao.
