A lawsuit over the Kansas voter ID law is headed to federal court.
The suit is challenging a requirement that voters show a photo ID when they cast a ballot.
The lawsuit was filed in state court earlier this year on behalf of two Overbrook residents who say the 2011 law is not constitutional.
The requirement for voters to show ID has been championed by Secretary of State Kris Kobach. He told the Associated Press that his office requested the case be moved to federal court because the lawsuit is now touching on voting issues previously decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Kobach says the photo ID requirement is needed to prevent voter fraud.
Critics of the law have said voter fraud is rare and the requirement suppresses voter turnout among minorities, the poor and elderly.
