Mardi Gras, Chinese New Year, Reggae And Grammy Lifetime & 2015 Winners

Monday, February 16

Global Village celebrates birthdays of Latin Jazz pioneer Machito and Portuguese guitar master Carlos Paredes. Plus music from 2015 Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient Flaco Jimenez, this year’s Best Latin Jazz Album winner, Arturo O’Farrill, and new electro-tango from Intended Immigration.

Tuesday, February 17

SPECIAL: It’s carnival time in the Global Village! Celebrating Fat Tuesday, Global Village heads to the carnival hot spots of Brazil for samba, Trinidad for calypso and steel drum music, and to the Crescent City for the Mardi Gras Indian group Wild Tchoupitoulas, and Mardi Gras favorites from Professor Longhair, the Hawketts and more.

Wednesday, February 18

Global Village tours the Mediterranean – with visits along the way to Italy (for an Italian Afrobeat group, the Mamud Band), the Middle East, Algeria, Spain and, taking a slight detour to the Adriatic, Balkan sounds by way of American from Slavic Soul Party and the Raya Brass Band.

Thursday, February 19

Global Village celebrates the start of Chinese New Year/the Spring Festival with music from Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, the Silk String Quartet, Wu Man, and the Heart of the Dragon Ensemble. It’s also the birthday of adventurous and eclectic saxophonist David Murray and we’ll hear him with the Gwo Ka Masters from Guadaloupe and Hungarian cimbalom master Balogh Kalman. Plus music from this year’s Grammy winner for Best World Music Album from Angelique Kidjo, and a Best World Music nominated album, Our World in Song.

Friday, February 20

Global Village highlights reggae and reggae influenced music from Bob Marley (a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient – the February feature in the Global Village), son Ziggy Marley (who took home this year’s Grammy for Best Reggae Album), Jamaican guitar legend Ernest Ranglin, new highlife reggae soul from Selasee & Fafa Family and more.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
