Memorial Day Airmen Of Note, Miles’ Birthday, Stevie Wonder & Remembering Bob Belden

Monday 5.25.15

Night Train steps aside for a Memorial Day special with the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Hour one of the show features the Airmen in a tribute to some of the most influential small groups in jazz, ensembles led by such legendary names as Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and more. Then in the second hour, it’s special best-of program with highlights of the Airmen performing with such jazz talents as Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling, Joe Locke, the New York Voices and Phil Woods.

Tuesday 5.26.15

Night Train marks birthdays of singer Peggy Lee and jazz legend Miles Davis. In hour two of the show, it’s a special Savannah Music Festival performance in tribute to Miles’ classic album, Kind of Blue, with Jason Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Terrell Stafford, Rodney Whittaker, Etienne Charles and Stephan Riley.

Night Train remembers musician, producer and arranger Bob Belden, who passed away last week;  celebrates birthdays of pianists Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Marc Copland, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, and bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pederson; and continues with more jazz versions of the music of Stevie Wonder for the May feature.

Thursday 5.28.15

Night Train highlights music from both legendary and contemporary pianists this evening – including music from Red Garland, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and Bill Evans, along with the latest releases from pianists Joe Alterman, Cyrus Chestnut, Eliane Elias, and Eric Reed.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
