In honor of Memorial Day, Night Train steps aside for the annual Airmen of Note holiday special, with the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force along with specials guests, singer Nnenna Freelon (hour one) and drummer Peter Erskine (hour two).

A long list of jazz artists with birthdays featured tonight on the Night Train – including trombonists Wayne Wallace and Wycliffe Gordon, pianists Lynne Arriale and Lafayette Harris, Jr., drummer Kenny Washington, trumpeter Sean Jones, and saxophonist Jim Snidero. There’s new music from Snidero with Jeremy Pelt (in a tribute to Cannonball Adderley), soul jazz group Organissimo, and pianist Ben Paterson (in a tribute to the drummer-less trios of Nat Cole and Oscar Peterson); and we continue our celebration of Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month with music from Akiko Tsuruga, the Asian American Jazz Trio, Tiger Okoshi, and Makoto Ozone.

Night Train marks birthdays of percussionist Armando Peraza (with Cal Tjader), pianist Dave McKenna, guitarist Randy Napoleon (featured on a new album with Freddy Cole), and big band star Benny Goodman (including a special about him in hour two of the show). And there’s new music from the Barrett Martin Group, Jim Snidero with Jeremy Pelt, and the OKB Trio.

Night Train features music from veteran drummer Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath, bassist Christian McBride, and saxophonists Greg Abate and Red Holloway. Plus new music from organist Mike LeDonne, the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, and Peter Erskine & the Dr. Um Band – and Night Train wraps up the May Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature with a special concert performance from guitarist Fareed Haque.
