Monday @ The Movies, Latin Jazz & Birthdays Of Anita O’Day, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Harris & More

Monday 10.17.16

It’s another Monday Night at the Movies tonight on the Night Train, joining Global Village and Strange Currency every Monday night this month to highlight film related music. Tonight it’s jazz versions of film themes from Wes Montgomery, the Phil Norman Tentet, and birthday artists Luiz Bonfa (of Black Orpheus fame – also featured on Global Village tonight), and guitarists Howard Alden and Barney Kessel. Plus new music from Shirley Horn, the Steve Gadd Band and Kenia.

Tuesday 10.18.16

Night Train marks birthdays of singers Anita O’Day and Curtis Stigers, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, drummer Bill Stewart, and songwriter Bobby Troupe. Plus new music from John Scofield, the Tierney Sutton Band, and a new compilation of hits from Nat King Cole.

Wednesday 10.19.16

Great guitars and tribute albums are featured tonight on the Night Train, including music from Pat Metheny, John Scofield’s collaboration with saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitar legend Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton with Wynton Marsalis, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio with guitarist Bobby Broom. Plus Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tribute to Billie Holiday, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and for the October Latin Jazz feature, Conrad Herwig showcasing the “Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.”

Thursday 10.20.16

Birthday celebrations tonight on the Night Train for saxophonist and composer Eddie Harris, drummer Willie Jones III, trumpeter Russell Gunn, and guitarist Martin Taylor. Plus a new album of previously unreleased studio recordings from pianist Erroll Garner, and more Latin Jazz for the October feature, including the new Latin Jazz Project Vol. 1 set from guitarist Ray Obiedo.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
