Night Train celebrates the birthdays of saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitarist Martin Taylor, trumpeter Russell Gunn, and oud player Anouar Brahem. Plus more for the October Jazz Noir feature – this time with music from Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil, which is often regarded as the last great movie of the classic film noir era – and in hour two a special delving into another classic film noir notable for its use of jazz, Sweet Smell of Success.

Night Train marks birthdays of flutist Ali Ryerson, bassist Marc Johnson, jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, and pianist Fred Hersch – including a special in hour two of the show featuring Fred Hersch in performance and conversation with acclaimed vocalist Renee Fleming. Plus new music from Akiko, and the New York Standards Quartet and more for the October Jazz Noir feature.

Wednesday 10.22.14

Great guitars and tribute albums are featured tonight on the Night Train, including music from Pat Metheny, John Scofield’s collaboration with saxophonist Eddie Harris, guitar legend Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton with Wynton Marsalis, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio with guitarist Bobby Broom. Plus Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tribute to Billie Holiday, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and Conrad Herwig showcasing the “Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.”

Thursday 10.23.14

Night Train marks birthdays of singer Dianne Reeves, west coast saxophonist Sonny Criss, and tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, who was a member of Charlie Haden Quartet West, a group that consciously and magically evoked the spirit of film noir and post-war Los Angeles in their music (for the Night Train “Jazz Noir” October feature). Plus new music from Freddy Cole, the Pat Mallinger Quartet, the Sean Jones Quartet, and Laurie Antonioli with a tribute to Joni Mitchell.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
