Night Train kicks off a week-long feature highlighting this year’s new jazz holiday releases with music from organists Radam Schwartz and Joey DeFrancesco. It’s also the birthday of legendary jazz organist Jimmy Smith - hour one features music he did as a leader and with jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery – then in hour two, it’s a Jazz Profiles special about the life and music of Jimmy Smith.

Night Train marks birthdays of NEA Jazz Masters Donald Byrd and Jimmy Owens, and continues with more new holiday titles for the week – this time including the new compilation, It’s Christmas on Mack Avenue, the Hollywood Tuba 12’s ‘Tis the Season TUBA Jolly, and a reissue of the Sackville All Star Christmas Record.

Some great jazz vocalists tonight on the Night Train - including Helen Merrill, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Kevin Mahogany, Claire Martin, and Roseanna Vitro – plus classic tracks from Wes Montgomery and Duke Ellington, along with music from Mose Allison, Bela Fleck with the original Flecktones, and the world jazz Kora Band.

Night Train marks the birthday of jazz piano giant McCoy Tyner with music he did under his own name, with John Coltrane, and in hour two of the show, in a special live performance. Plus more new holiday titles, including music from Renee Fleming’s Christmas in New York which features several special jazz guests, and Irvin Mayfield’s A New Orleans Creole Christmas.
