The Kansas Department of Revenue released tax tableson Tuesday that designate how much income employers should withhold from employee paychecks. The policy is the result of the tax increase that was recently passed by state lawmakers.
Revenue Secretary Sam Williams says the perception with Gov. Brownback's 2012 tax cuts was that businesses were getting all the breaks.
"In reality, individuals were getting the biggest portion of that break, and now we’re putting that burden back on to the individuals and to the businesses," Williams says. "Businesses, who were our biggest job creator, will now come back into the tax fold."
He says employees need to plan for less take-home pay.
“Businesses need to make sure they're planning for less income because they're going to need to pay more taxes," Williams says.
William says the taxes are retroactive to Jan. 1, 2017, and they will go up another step at the beginning of 2018.
