New Releases From The First Couple Of Banjo, Jackson Browne & Remembering A Most Unusual Musician

Thursday, October 9: Listen for selections from Dust Bowl Demos Pt. 3 from Wichita’s Tom Page Trio as well as featured music from Lucinda Williams and George Harrison.

Friday, October 10: We’ll hear from Los Lobos, Lucinda Williams and George Harrison.

Saturday, October 11: Rock & Roll Time is the upcoming release from American music legend Jerry Lee Lewis. Co-produced by acclaimed drummer Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Traveling Wilburys) the album features guest appearances from Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Robbie Robertson (The Band) and others. We’ll hear selections from that recording on this episode of Strange Currency plus music from Kisses on the Bottom the 2012 standards collection from Paul McCartney.

Monday, October 13: We’ll hear from the new self-titled debut by husband and wife duo Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Considered preeminent banjo players the couple covers a diverse range of music on this recording, including touches of Appalachia, jazz, murder ballads and even hints of world music. We’ll hear from that recording as well as Guitar In The Space Age! the latest recording from master guitarist Bill Frisell. This album looks back at iconic guitar songs including “Pipeline,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and “Surfer Girl.”

Tuesday, October 14: Arthur Russell was a rare force in American music, a composer and cellist whose interests spanned from disco to classical and whose credits included work with Talking Heads, Philip Glass and funk icon Bootsy Collins. Russell died of AIDS in 1992 and is honored on a new compilation from the Red Hot organization, Red Hot + Arthur Russell featuring contributions from Hot Chip, Blood Orange and Jose Gonzalez. Formed in 1977 Britain’s The Pop Group drew on a broad range of influences that included John Coltrane, 20th century composers such as Stockhausen, the music of Funkadelic and the political landscape of Great Britain that gave birth to the first wave of punk music. We Are Time is a reissue of a 1980 compilation from the band that features a variety of demos and live cuts from the group’s initial three year run.

Wednesday, October 15: Standing In The Breach is the latest album from singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. The album touches on themes of social issues and matters of the heart, two subjects Browne has dealt with extensively since the start of his recording career in the early 1970s. We’ll hear from Standing In The Breach as well as from Thirty Three & 1/3, the 1976 release from October featured artist George Harrison.

Thursday, October 16: Listen for selections from Todd Snider’s 2009 album The Excitement Plan, which features a guest appearance from country music legend Loretta Lynn and the song “America’s Favorite Pastime,” a song about baseball player Dock Ellis who threw a no-hitter game in 1970 reportedly while under the influence of LSD. We’ll also hear from The Baseball Project and a song that band recorded about Ellis, “The Day Dock Went Hunting Heads.”
