Night Train highlights ‘new standards’ and tribute albums tonight – including Tierney Sutton’s celebration of the music of Joni Mitchell, a Joni cover from Claire Martin and music from Mitchell’s standards album, Both Sides Now – also the Trio of Oz doing Stone Temple Pilots; Benny Golson’s celebration of the tenor in jazz; Steve Turre’s salute to trombonists who were part of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers; and Carmen McCrae with music of Billie Holiday.

As part of the June Guitar Month feature, it’s more-than-six-strings night on the Night Train, with guitarists who play instruments with seven and more strings. Among the artists featured - the ‘father of the seven-string guitar’ George Van Eps, Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Steve Masakowski, and Egberto Gismonti. Plus birthday salutes to bassist Milt Hinton and saxophonist Donald Harrison, and new music from Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath, Dave Stryker, the Susan Krebs Chamber Band, Harold Mabern, and Cyrus Chestnut.

In conjunction with the June feature celebrating Les Paul’s centennial birthday, Night Train highlights music from Paul’s friend and inspiration, Django Reinhardt, and a wide array of gypsy jazz. Along with classic recordings from the Hot Club of France and covers of Django compositions, the show highlights new gypsy jazz inspired albums from Federico Britos, Pearl Django, Daniel Weltlinger, and a new reissue from guitarist Martin Taylor’s Spirit of Django lineup.

Night Train celebrates birthdays of vibes great Bobby Hutcherson and drummer Joe Chambers and continues with more electric jazz guitar for the June feature – including an appearance at Jazz at the Philharmonic by Les Paul, a Juno-nominated release from Lenny Breau, and a new album from Andrew DiRuzza and his Quintet. Plus a special in hour two featuring one of the greats of jazz guitar, Wes Montgomery.
