Newport Grill Takes Nothing For Granted

Newport Grill, in Bradley Fair in Wichita, is one of the few restaurants in town that specializes in fresh seafood. By fresh, I mean flown in every single day.

The food is thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. They serve several dishes that are totally crave-worthy.

The last time I visited, I had the shrimp cocktail. Giant shrimp, crunchy and sweet, served with an avocado/wasabi emulsion and a zippy house-made cocktail sauce. My friend and I also shared the ahi tuna tartare, which was perfectly made. Raw tuna, hand minced, served with a soy dressing, wonton chips, a briny seaweed salad, and cream cheese to add a creamy touch. We fought over the last bite.

Salads at Newport Grill are lovely creations. They are not an afterthought, as many salads can be. The kale salad is tender, mineral, served with curried cashews and parmesan. I love the textural play between the crunch of the nuts, the toothy kale, and the beautiful apricots that are part of the vinaigrette.

The arugula salad is balanced with sharp, tiny arugula, fennel shavings, pomegranate , apple and sherry vinaigrette.

Newport Grill lobster roll

For the entrée, we shared an interesting rendition of shrimp and grits. Grilled, spiced, gigantic prawns sitting atop a bed of creamy, cheesy polenta, with a side of some of the best sautéed peppers and squash I have eaten in a long time.

Nothing at Newport is taken for granted, as the vegetables were as good as the rest of the dish. The seared ahi tuna and caramelized Brussels sprouts with brown butter quinoa and tart, dried cherries was also mouth-watering. We ordered the tuna rare and it came out exactly right.

Newport serves lunch, dinner and a Sunday brunch.
