Global Village pays tribute to Big Chief Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolias who passed away last week; marks the birthday of acclaimed English folk-rock bassist Ashley Hutchings; and highlights more of the Best of 2014 – the time with the Grammy-nominated album from the Pedrito Martinez Group, the Latin Grammy-winning album from Chick Corea, and a Global Village favorite and most played release on European world music radio in 2014 by Aziza Brahim.
Crossroads will also pay tribute to Big Chief Bo Dollis, Friday night at 10 pm and Sunday at 7 pm.

Saxophones go global this time in the Global Village – with music from saxophonists from Nigeria (Femi Kuti), Norway (Jan Garbarek), Brazil (Paulo Moura), Jamaica (Roland Alphonso of the Skatalites), and France (reggae saxophonist Stepper). Plus music from William Onyeabor, and the Pipperment Twist set featuring ‘60s twist and rock instrumentals from Spain.

Global Village highlights some giants of world music – including South Africa’s Mahotella Queens, reggae great Peter Tosh, English folk-rock singer/songwriter John Martyn, Chilean new song masters, Inti-Illimani, and the ‘new flamenco’ classic from the Songhai lineup.
Thursday, January 29
Global Village highlights music from two sons of world music giants – Femi Kuti (son of Afrobeat legend Fela) and Vieux Farka Toure (son of Malian great Ali Farka Toure) – plus the world blues of David Maxwell, the Fine Young Cannibals meet Elvis, live and acoustic Toots & the Maytals, a Grammy-winning album from Lila Downs, and some pioneering bossa nova from Herbie Mann.
Friday, January 30
Global Village wraps up its month-long look back at the best of 2014 and celebrates the birthday of Ahmed Abdul Malik, the American-born jazz bassist whose credits included work with Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane and who was a pioneer in introducing the oud and Middle Eastern and North African influences into jazz.
