Remembering Mose Allison, Celebrating Dr. John, Coleman Hawkins, Jazz Guitar & Thanksgiving

Monday 11.21.16

Night Train marks birthdays of Crescent City favorite Dr. John (including music from the new Musical Mojo album and from his salute to Johnny Mercer) and one of the giants of the jazz tenor sax, Coleman Hawkins (including a Hawkins special in hour two of the show). Plus November featured artist Lou Donaldson, Mose Allison, and the latest from pianist Dan Cray.

Tuesday 11.22.16

Night Train remembers singer, songwriter, pianist and NEA Jazz Master Mose Allison who passed away last week with music from throughout his career. There’s also music from several other artists – Leon Russell, Leonard Cohen and Bob Cranshaw – who recently passed away; more music from November featured artist Lou Donaldson with music he did under his own name and with soul jazz organ legend Jimmy Smith and from the early days of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers; and  new music from Catherine Russell, Houston Person with Ron Carter,  John Scofield and Charlie Hunter.

Wednesday 11.23.16

Jazz guitar is the focus tonight on the Night Train with music from Jimmy Ponder, Jim Hall with Pat Metheny, Romero Lubambo, Bob Devos, the John Abercrombie Quartet, Leni Stern, Peter Bernstein, and Grant Green.

Thursday 11.24.16

Night Train celebrates Thanksgiving with a menu packed with musical goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
