Night Train begins a week in tribute to two key figures in jazz who passed away last week – harmonica jazz great Toots Thielemans and legendary jazz recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder – with music from throughout Thielemans career and some of the many classic albums Van Gelder recorded. Also tonight music from birthday artists bebop great Charlie Parker (including a Jazz Profiles special in hour two), singer Dinah Washington, and contemporary pianist and composer FlorianHoefner – and new music from the Fred Hersch Trio and the Andy Brown Quartet.

Night Train highlights singers tonight – both legendary and rising stars. Among the artists featured are Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Tierney Sutton, Andy Bey, Cassandra Wilson, and Nnenna Freelon. Plus music from pianist Joey Calderazzo, organist Brian Charette, and trombonist John Fedchock, along Ahmad Jamal in an unusual setting with a 15-piece string orchestra on his 1959 release, At the Penthouse, and a classic from Stan Getz with Dizzy Gillespie.

Night Train wraps up the August Kenny Burrell feature with music he did with soul jazz organ great Jimmy Smith (including from the classic albums Back at the Chicken Shack and The Sermon, both engineering by Rudy Van Gelder, whose work Night Train has been featuring throughout the week), along with new releases featuring classic Jimmy Smith compositions, and a Jazz Profiles Jimmy Smith special in hour two of the show.

Night Train wraps up a week long tribute to jazz harmonica player Toots Thielemans and legendary jazz recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder with a program devoted to exclusively to music from both. We’ll hear Toots as a leader and with some great singers, including Shirley Horn and Dianne Reeves, and classic albums engineered by Van Gelder from Coleman Hawkins, Grant Green, and (extending the feature one more day) August artist Kenny Burrell.
