Restaurant Review: Harry's Uptown Bar & Grill

If you have lived in Wichita for longer than a year and haven’t made the trip to Harry’s Uptown Bar & Grill, you are missing out on some of the best atmosphere in town. Harry’s is like a Wichita Cheers, and you might even see Kirstie Alley there.

Harry’s serves bar food. Think lots of fried, salty appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and salads. The entrée menu has a few surprises, like fried chicken livers and frito pie.

I have been going to meet friends there for 22 years. It is the kind of place where regulars park themselves at the bar and have loud conversations about just about anything. They have televisions tuned to sports channels, but those are mainly ignored by the crowds of people eating and drinking and having fun. The bartenders at Harry’s pour very strong drinks, so get a designated driver if you go.

My husband and I go there a lot, because it’s down the street from us, the food is good, and we almost always run into someone we know. I order the B-52, a half-pound burger that is grilled to order (you can get it medium rare, but I don’t recommend it), served on a toasted bun, with cheese if you want. They have a number of variations on the burger theme.

Wayne likes the sirloin steak, with planks of steak fries, salty with Montreal seasoning and served with a plain lettuce salad. He can get it well done with ranch dressing and that’s something I’m not going to serve at home.

Thankfully, Harry’s is now non-smoking, unless you sit on the patio. It used to be so smoky that we would have to take our clothes off on the porch when we got home, but that’s fixed. They are open late, as one might expect.
