Three Imaginary Boys, Losers And A Devil On The Run

Wednesday, June 1

Released in May 1979 Three Imaginary Boys is the debut album from The Cure. Featuring longtime favorites such as “10:15 Saturday Night” and “Fire in Cairo,” the record set the template for what the band would become in the ensuing decade. Listen for selections from that release as well as music from Paul McCartney’s 1993 release Off The Ground.

Released in 1999 Run Devil Run found Paul McCartney looking back on his early influences while trying to move ahead. After the death of his wife, Linda, and the labor-intensive experience of working on The Beatles Anthology, McCartney hadn’t written much in the way of new songs but he did have a creative drive. He gathered old friends David Gilmour (guitar, Pink Floyd), Ian Paice (drums, Deep Purple) and several others and cut 16 songs, most of them covers, in the style of early rock ‘n’ roll. Listen for selections from that release as well as from The Cure’s 1992 LP Wish.

Friday, June 3

It’s Our New Month, New Music Feature: Monolith of Phobos is the brand-new recording from Sean Lennon and Primus bassist and vocalist Les Claypool. The record reflects the pair’s interest in psychedelic rock and Lennon’s own genetic connection to the music of the 1960s. We’ll hear selections from this release as well as selections from the latest release by The Monkees, Good Times! which features songs written by Andy Partridge of XTC, members of The Jam, Oasis and Death Cab For Cutie.

Saturday, June 4

We celebrate the birthday of Reeves Gabrels, guitarist for The Cure with selections from his solo career, his work with David Bowie in the band Tin Machine and on albums such as Earthling, plus a smattering of guest appearances.

Monday, June 6

Terry Reid is considered a bit of lost legend in music circles. Despite some early success as a songwriter in his native England, Reid failed to find an audience that would support his unique voice and songwriting. A new archival release, The Other Side of the River, captures Reid in the early 1970s with Jackson Browne collaborator David Lindley on guitar, members of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, and Yes drummer Alan White. At times comparable with the music of David Crosby and Stephen Stills, The Other Side of the River captures Terry Reid in one of his most imaginative periods. Listen for selections from this recording as well as music from Mike Keneally’s 2001 effort Wooden Smoke.

Tuesday, June 7

Acoustic guitarist and composer William Tyler returns with Modern Country, a series of pieces about a vanishing way of life in America. Tyler’s previous recordings have included meditations on urban sprawl. Listen for selections from this release as well as music from Fruit Bats, Absolute Loser. The record marks a return to the Fruit Bats name after founding member Eric Johnson spent a time performing under the name EDJ. This new release reflects on people who have lost something close to them and is rendered with sophistication and empathy.

Wednesday, June 8

Long seen as the middle-of-the-road Beatle, Paul McCartney has dabbled with experimental music many times over his career. We’ll hear selections from his work under the name The Fireman, a collaboration with UK producer Flood, on albums such as Rushes. Plus selections from The Cure’s Disintegration LP.
