U.S. & Cape Verde Independence Days, Joe Zawinul, Award Winners & July Feature- Carlos Santana

Monday, July 4

Global Village celebrates the 4th of July with a rich array of music from artists from around the world who now call America home, from American artists inspired by world sounds, and by some of the many great regional and ethnic musics of this country. Among the artists featured are two NEA Heritage fellows - new-klezmer pioneer Andy Statman and U.S. based Iraqi oud player Rahim Alhaj - Hawaiian slack key guitarist Ledward Kaapana, the Afrobeat-inspired band Ikebe Shakedown, the pioneering world chamber jazz ensemble, Oregon, and the Crescent City’s Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Tuesday, July 5

Global Village celebrates Cape Verde’s Independence Day with music from the island nation – including the legendary Cesaria Evora; Evora’s musical director Bau , songwriter Teofile Chantre and protégé Fantcha; rising star Elida Almeida; the ‘King of Mourna’ Bana; and the new Space Echo compilation that captures developing modern sounds from the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Wednesday, July 6

Global Village highlights pioneering and contemporary Latin rock and soul this time – including July featured artists Santana, the band Malo with Carlos Santana’s brother Jorge, contemporary pan-Latin bands Grupo Fantasma, M.A.K.U. Soundsystem and Buyepongo, Congolese rhumba rock group Ry-Co Jazz, ‘60s chicano rock pioneers Thee Midniters, and Latin soul jazz master Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers.

Thursday, July 7

Global Village celebrates the birthday of world-jazz legend Joe Zawinul, continues with more music for the July Santana feature (this time as a guest artist with singer Angelique Kidjo), and highlights music from three recently honored artists – 2017 NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater, newly named NEA Heritage Fellow Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and sitar great Baluji Shrivastav.

(While Global Village highlights the world music side of Joe Zawinul for his birthday today – Night Train later this evening will explore his earlier efforts more rooted in jazz.)

Friday, July 8

In conjunction with the KMUW music shows’ Guitar Month, Global Village highlights some global guitars including those of English folk great John Renbourn, Indian electric guitarist Prasanna, Mali’s Boubacar Traore, flamenco guitarist Raul Rodriguez, and the meeting of flamenco and classical guitars from Pedro Soler & Philippe Mouratoglou.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
