One U.S. Senate seat will be up for election in Kansas this year, and so far, three candidates are interested in the job, including current Sen. Jerry Moran.
Moran, a Republican, filed the paperwork necessary in Kansas to begin a re-election bid for a second, six-year term in the U.S. Senate.
He made the announcement in a two-minute online video.
"We don’t do this for a title," Moran says in the video. "We don’t do this for a sign on the door that says U.S. Senator. Rather it’s for a belief that we can and must return America to a country different and better than it is today."
Before his election in 2010, Moran served 14 years in the House and eight years as a state senator.
No other Republican candidate has filed. There are two people vying for the Democratic nomination, Patrick Wiesner, an attorney from Lawrence, and Monique Singh-Bey, a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.
The state primary is set for August 2.
Republicans hold a significant voter-registration advantage in Kansas and have won every U.S. Senate race in the state since 1932.
Moran has received endorsements from the Wichita Area Builders Association (WABA), Kansans for Life, Kansas Farm Bureau and the Kansas Livestock Association.
Kansas’ other U.S. Senate seat, currently held by Senator Pat Roberts, will come up for election in 2020.
