Monday, June 20

Global Village welcomes in the first full day of the new season with songs of summer from Bob Marley & the Wailers, Desmond Dekker, Ray Barretto, Bill Withers, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Michael Franti & Spearhead and more.

Tuesday, June 21

As part of the June Silk Road feature, Global Village pays a visit this time to Central Asia – the crossroads for all the paths along the Silk Road. We’ll hear music from the Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble inspired by Turkmenistan, Uzbek star Yulduz Usmanova, traditional music from Kyrgyzstan’s Damira Njazbekova, and some heavy metal folk from Kazakhstan’s Ulytau. Plus new music from Western Sahara’s Aziza Brahim, Finland’s Sampo Lassila Narinkka, and the U.S. Virgin Islands’ Stanley & the Ten Sleepless Knights.

Wednesday, June 22

It’s the birthday today of Cuban guitarist Eliades Ochoa, best known for his work with the Buena Vista Social Club, but also the leader of the long-standing band Cuarteto Patria band, and with a new album with his own Alma Latina lineup. Plus music from June featured artists, Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, from the new Sing Me Home album, and new music from Ziggy Marley and Ibrahim Maalouf.

Thursday, June 23

Global Village highlights a some world-jazz artists and recordings this time – including the gypsy brass meets gypsy jazz guitar set from Adrian Raso & Fanfare Ciocarlia,  some avant second line sounds from the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, and for the June feature, one of the artists who worked with the Silk Road Ensemble - Rabih Abou-Khalil - whose music offers a unique blend of Middle Eastern music and jazz.

Friday, June 24

It’s Take Your Dog to Work Day and Global Village lets loose the hounds in songs from Jesse Winchester, the Roches, Rufus Thomas, Nick Drake, Big Mama Thornton and more. Plus music from African greats Orchestra Baobab and King Sunny Ade, the Balkan-inspired Tipsy Oxcart, kora player Seckou Keita, and the Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten Cambodian rock soundtrack.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
