Wichita State University has created a new law enforcement resource center at its West campus building in Maize.
The new space will be called the WSU West Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Resource Center.
The resource center was developed to provide a convenient place on the west side for local law enforcement officers to write reports or take a break from street patrols.
Kristin Brewer, director of the Midwest Criminal Justice Institute at WSU, says having this designated space also allows criminal justice students more engagement with law enforcement officers.
"It’s a good opportunity for students to interact with law enforcement as well as the public and be able to build those relationships and have students be able to get hands-on experience with the law enforcement there," Brewer says.
Brewer says the law enforcement resource center will help better serve the public because law enforcement officers will be able to stay close to their beats to get their work done without having to travel several miles away to the nearest substation.
Wichita State worked with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies the past few months to get the room ready.
Brewer says the partnership is an extension of the relationship fostered in the development of the new law enforcement training center on WSU’s main campus.
There are more than 600 students in Wichita State’s criminal justice programs.
