Global Village highlights a wide array of contemporary female world music artists including the latest from Angelique Kidjo (with her remake of the Talking Heads’ Remain in Light), Mongolian singer Urna (with Polish trio Kroke), pipa player Wu man (with Son de San Diego), Turkish rocker Gaye Su Akyol, the female led Tuareg group Tartit, and Sudanese-Italian singer Amira Kheir. We’ll also hear music from Buffy Sainte-Marie, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, and for the February Global Harps feature, Tomoko Sugawara playing the ancient kugo harp.
Tuesday, February 5
Happy New Year! Global Village celebrates Chinese New Year, Tet (Vietnam), Seollal (Korea), Losar (Tibet), or the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. We’ll highlight traditional (Heart of the Dragon Ensemble), world fusion (Gao Hong and Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble) and contemporary pop (Sa Dingding) from China, along with music from Taiwanese neo-folk ensemble A Moving Sound, Tibetan artist Yungchen Lhamo, Vietnamese pop singer Carol Kim, the adventurous world-jazz duo of Huong Thanh and Nguyen Le, and more to mark the holiday.

Global Village marks the birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley with music from his classic recordings and from a wide range of covers of his songs from such artists as I-Three members Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Ivorian artist Tiken Jah Fakoly, roots groups the Gladiators and Inner Circle, original Wailer Bunny Wailer, Rebel Tumbao, and more
Thursday, February 7
Another exploration of global guitars this time in the Global Village, including steel guitar from Nigeria’s King Sunny Ade and Indian blues band Michael Messer’s Mitra, guitarist Derek Gripper with kora player Tunde Jegede, Buena Vista Social Club guitarist Manuel Galban, desert blues guitarist Ramon Goose, and Canadian global guitar wizard Harry Manx.

Global Village highlights some global funk including music from master funkster James Brown, Latin funk from Miami’s Spam All Stars and Guatemala’s Doctor Nativo, funky afrobeat from Fela’s son Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, and some funky favorites from 2018 from the African Scream Contest 2 compilation and Brazil’s Bixiga 70.
