State Trying To Make Sperm Donor Pay Child Support

Kansas man who answered an online ad to donate sperm to a lesbian couple is fighting the state's efforts to force him to pay child support for the resulting child.

A Department of Children and Families spokeswoman says the agency would not be pursuing payment if the state hadn't provided more than $6,000 in health care benefits for the child after the lesbian couple ended their relationship. The state tries to establish a child's paternity when benefits are involved.

Next week, The State Board of Education will hear about progress in writing new standards for teaching history, government and social studies in Kansas.

The board's agenda for its January 9 meeting also includes a status report on a national project to draft new science standards.

A sperm donor says a state effort to make him pay child support for a child conceived through artificial insemination is politically motivated.

William Marotta of Topeka says when he donated sperm to lesbian couple Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner in 2009, he relinquished all parental rights, including financial responsibility. However, when Bauer and Schreiner filed for state health insurance last year, the state demanded the donor's name so it could collect child support for the now 3-year-old girl.
