Wichita cyclist Brett Hogan likes to ride in races, for long distances, and fast. He got into bicycling in high school, when his swim coach told him he could improve his performance by adding cycling to his fitness regime. He hopped on a bike and didn't look back.

Bike Month Profile: Hoyt Hillman

Hoyt Hillman is the President of the GreenWay Alliance of Wichita, a non-profit group that works for a network of parks, trails and greenways in the south-central Kansas area. Hillman has been working to create green spaces for decades.

Sgt. Travis Rakestraw works with the Accident Follow-Up Unit and the Robbery Investigation Section of the Wichita Police Department. When it comes to street accidents, he says his unit sees "the worst of the worst." Sgt. Rakestraw says if both bicyclists and motor vehicle drivers pay more attention to each other, his team will have fewer serious or fatal accidents to investigate each year, and more people can get where they want to go safely.

Bike Month Profile: Amy Delamaide

Wichita resident Amy Delamaide started riding her bike as a kid. She and her dad would take quick trips down the street to Dairy Queen for ice cream at first. Years later, she and her family had worked up to participating in Biking Across Kansas, an annual recreational trek across the state from west to east.

While Amy loves taking longer bike rides and using the bike trails around Wichita, she also makes time to take short trips to work or to the store. She likes tooling around town on her yellow 1970s Huffy bike.

Your Guide To Bicycle Month In Wichita

May has been proclaimed Bicycle Month. The city of Wichita is celebrating by highlighting recent bike path improvements and by looking forward to what's next. There are also many bicycle-related events planned throughout the city.

Highlighted Events

May 17 is Bike to Work Day, which will include breakfast stations around Wichita from 7:00 to 9:00 and free lunch at Old Town Square from 11:30 to 1:30.
