State Objections Board Meets To Rule On Election Complaints

The State Objections Board has upheld a decision by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach that helped dozens of legislative candidates. The board ruled that Kobach did have the authority to assign candidates to new legislative districts, even though those candidates had already filed to run for office in other districts. Kobach assigned more than 80 candidates to run in new districts after a federal court drew new legislative maps. Kobach himself sits on the board that ruled in favor of his office’s decision. Lt.

New Law Will Help Create Job Opportunities For Disabled Kansans

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback Tuesday signed into law a bill that will create jobs for Kansans with disabilities.

House Bill 2453 will give preference for state contracts to businesses that meet specific criteria, including employing at least 20 percent of full-time workers in Kansas with disabilities.

Companies must also do the majority of their business in Kansas and pay at least 75 percent of the total health insurance premium cost for their employees.

Ceremony Honors Fallen Officers

A ceremony honoring fallen law enforcement officers of Sedgwick County will take place noon Friday in the City Council Chambers of City Hall in downtown Wichita.

Twenty-nine officers have fallen in the line of duty since 1871, including 19 Wichita police officers, eight Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputies and one officer each from Derby and Clearwater.

For the first time in more than 14 years, more deaths occurred by gunshot in 2011 than traffic accidents.

Sen. Moran Says Entrepreneur Spirit Will Bring Jobs To Kansas

United States Senator Jerry Moran toured the Advanced Networking Research Institute on the Wichita State campus Friday and spoke to research students about the importance of their work.

Senator Moran says he recognizes the value entrepreneurs bring to communities such as Wichita and wants to see that spirit grow the economy to create more jobs.

Mayor Brewer Sets Sights On Diversification In State Of The City Address

In his State of the City Address Tuesday night, Mayor Carl Brewer said despite being challenged by dwindling revenues and continuing obligations, Wichita is healthy, focused and moving forward.

Mayor Brewer addressed a full house downtown at City Hall. He said Wichita continues to stabilize through a new way of thinking - a thinking that demands the “right” solutions rather than the easy ones.
