Gov. Sam Brownback has decided that he won't disclose the applicants for the Kansas Court of Appeals, after all. Gov. Brownback says it would prevent some qualified candidates from coming forward. The window for applying doesn't close until July 31.

Brownback says potential candidates told him they preferred that their names remain confidential.

Governor Brownback Will Consider Releasing Names of Court of Appeals Applicants

Update 11:35 a.m. Brownback spokeswoman Eileen Hawley has revised her statement to say only that the release of names is under discussion. She said she'd been premature in announcing a change in plans because the governor hadn't formally signed off. Hawley said no final decision has been made.

Brownback's Office Rejects Request To Disclose Court Of Appeals Applicants

Gov. Sam Brownback's office has rejected a request to publicly disclose the names of applicants for a new seat on the state Court of Appeals.

The League of Women Voters of Kansas filed a request for the applicant names under the Kansas Open Records Act. League President, former Democratic state Rep. Dolores Furtado, says the process for picking judges legislators approved this year is "definitely less open" than the previous method.

Judge Thomas Malone Named Chief Judge Of Kan. Court of Appeals

Judge Thomas Malone is the new chief judge of the Kansas Court of Appeals.

The Kansas Supreme Court announced today that Thomas Malone will replace Chief Judge Richard Greene, who died on October 7.

Malone has been acting chief judge since Greene became ill during the summer. He's served on the Court of Appeals since 2003. He practiced law in private practice in Wichita from 1979 through 1990, when he also taught business law courses at Newman University.
