KS Schools Could See Small Boost In Per-Pupil Funding

Kansas' public schools could receive a slight increases in per-student spending starting in fiscal year 2015.

The State House Appropriations Committee accepted a subcommittee's report on K-12 spending Monday morning. The subcommittee's budget allocates more than $3 billion dollars for all public schools. Funding per pupil would remain at $3,838  for fiscal year 2014 but would increase marginally by $14 per pupil starting July 1, 2014.

Brownback Requests Hold On School Funding Ruling

Gov. Sam Brownback is seeking mediation in a lawsuit over school funding.

A district court recently ruled that the state isn't meeting constitutional requirements and needs to increase funding for Kansas schools.

Brownback asked the state Attorney General to seek a hold on the ruling, so all parties involved have time to study solutions. The filings also request the court to appoint a mediator, in attempt to reach an agreement outside of courtroom.

The school funding lawsuit was filed on behalf of students, parents and four school districts.

Lawmakers Hear School Efficiency Suggestions

The head of a school efficiency task force Monday presented school efficiency recommendations to lawmakers in Topeka. The House and Senate education committees are meeting jointly this week to review education issues.

Gov. Sam Brownback formed the task force to look for ways to spend education funding more efficiently.

Kansas GOP Has New Chair

Kansas Republicans have picked Wichita's Kelly Arnold as the state GOP's new chair.

Kelly Arnold has been the GOP's vice chair for the past two years. He has been both executive director and chair of the Sedgwick County party.

Arnold will replace Amanda Adkins, who chaired the state party for four years.

KS Legislators Agree To Trim 2013 Session

Kansas legislative leaders from both parties have endorsed plans to shorten this year's annual session to 80 days.

If they're successful, the Legislature will trim 10 days off the normal 90 days that leaders expect each year.
