KS Legislators Agree To Trim 2013 Session

Kansas legislative leaders from both parties have endorsed plans to shorten this year's annual session to 80 days.

If they're successful, the Legislature will trim 10 days off the normal 90 days that leaders expect each year.

Emporia BOE: Security Guards Will Be Armed

Security guards at Emporia's high school and middle school will be able to carry guns starting February 1. 

The Emporia school district's board of education voted Wednesday to allow the security guards to carry guns while on duty at the schools. Currently, all school employees are banned from carrying guns. 

Superintendent Theresa Davidson said the change will move the district closer to a comprehensive plan for making all students and staff safe.

Kansas Students Slip On Standardized Tests

A new report for Kansas public schools shows that students slipped in their performance on standardized tests during the past school year.

Deputy Education Commissioner Brad Neuenswander says officials are studying why the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards in reading and math fell slightly in the 2011-2012 school year.

The figures from the Kansas Department of Education were presented yesterday to the State Board of Education.
